    Position Overview

    As a Perishable Ripener you will be responsible for daily inspections of all in-bound and in-house produce commodities; Plans, direct, execute and monitors the ripening process in accordance with standard operating procedures. Monitors expiration or best use dates, and address product opportunities accordingly. Monitoring and ripening of bananas/avocados as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • must be able to work in different temprature enviorments
    • 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. start time
    • Ensure quality of merchandise by inspecting all inbound perishable commodities in accordance with Grocers Supply guidelines and USDA standards. Documents product opportunities that does not meet company specifications; according to reporting requirements.
    • Plan, direct, execute and monitor the ripening process in accordance with standard operating procedures. Monitor forecasting needs, along with maintaining ripening schedules, room monitoring & adjustments and coordinating with buyer and QA manager on fruit availability.
    • Responsible for the daily quality inspection of in-house perishable products, along with verifying product expiration dates or best use dates; notifies the Buying Department through department reports on any quality concerns or items approaching their expiration date.
    • Determine and ensure perishable produce commodities are slotted in proper cooler according to temperature guidelines
    • Works closely with warehouse and inventory personnel to insure quality, rotation, and date issues are handled accordingly.
    • Communicate with individuals or in groups, both verbally and/or in writing. Prepare, review and email business reports dealing with all aspects of Quality Assurance responsibilities; identify areas of opportunities, follow-up, and follow-through until completion. 
    • Utilizes PC, working with Microsoft office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) along with utilizing mainframe system to research and create company reports and maintain spread sheets.
    • Delegate work duties and responsibilities among QA and banana ripening staff as it relates to daily departmental functions.
    • Assist department manager in all operational aspects to ensure proper processes and procedures are followed.

    Qualifications

    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
    • Experience: MHE experience preferred, 3-5 years ripening knowledge
    • 6 months experience performing produce or meat quality control related responsibilities; 6 months experience performing clerical related responsibilities
    • Basic to intermediate level proficiency using computer applications (e.g. MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel)
